Joe Trunzo and Vetan Kapoor are graduate students at the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia. This blog is an effort to promote an increased awareness and appreciation of the important role that history has played in shaping the present opportunities and challenges to policymakers seeking to pursue Social Security reforms. It is hoped that tracing the evolution of Social Security through the rhetoric and actions of contemporary presidents will foster renewed discussions about the importance of ensuring access to social insurance, promoting efficiency and cost-saving mechanisms, and retaining a commitment to innovative policy approaches.
